A former K’amba Queen contestant is facing five criminal charges after stealing a vehicle from outside a Hay River store and taking it for a joyride earlier this month.
Royann Bugghins, 18, was charged after a 1999 Ford F150 truck was stolen from outside the Super A Gas Bar on July 14 at approximately 8:30 p.m. Const. Travis Gallant of the Hay River RCMP said the theft occurred shortly after the truck’s owners entered the store.
“They were just inside for a short period of time and the vehicle was stolen,” he said.
Officers began searching for the vehicle throughout Hay River, but were unable to locate it until the following morning. Gallant said officers received information from a resident that the truck was hidden in the bushes near the new village ice road off Riverview Drive at approximately 10 a.m. on July 15.
Gallant said the truck suffered an undisclosed amount of damage to an area near the gas tank.
“Basically, she tried to set it on fire,” Gallant explained. Bugghins was then arrested.
Bugghins, who was a finalist for the K’amba Queen this year, is charged with one count of theft over $5,000, one count of arson, two counts of theft under $5,000, and one count of mischief.
She was released from custody after posting bail and will be making her first appearance in Hay River Territorial Court on Sept. 30.
The Hay River RCMP Detachment is advising residents to keep their vehicles locked at all times, especially when going into a store.
