Ice Pilots up for awards

The nominations for the 2011 Gemini Awards are in, and Ice Pilots NWT has made it to the list.

The 26th annual awards show nomination list was released on Aug. 3, and has Buffalo Airways up for a potential five awards.

The crew has been nominated for Best General/Human Interest Series, Best Direction in a Lifestyle/Practical Information Program or Series, Best Original Music for a Lifestyle/Practical Information or Reality Program or Series, Best Photography in an Information Program or Series and Best Sound in an Information/Documentary Program or Series.

Mikey McBryan, manager of Buffalo Airways was thrilled by the five nominations.

“Last year we were nominated (for) one Gemini, it was for sound mix,” said McBryan.

“But this year with five nominations, it was a surprise.”

He said that the nominations show just how well Ice Pilots NWT has taken off, as the cast and crew had no idea to expect when they first started off with the program.

“It’s awesome that our show has been recognized by the film industry,” said McBryan.

“When we started this show we never thought anyone would even watch it, let alone get recognized.”

Also nominated is the online documentary created about Pine Point by Paul Shoebridge and Michael Simons from Vancouver, a team of media designers more commonly known as The Goggles.

Welcome to Pine Point is up for Best Original Program or Series produced for Digital Media – Non-Fiction.

The program won two Webbys earlier this year.

The awards will be taking place on Sept. 7 in Toronto.
