One person is dead and another in police custody after an incident in Hay River Monday night.Hay River RCMP officers received a call at 10:19 p.m. and found one victim in a Cranberry Crescent home in need of emergency aid at the scene. The injured woman, reportedly Linda Lafferty, was transported to H.H. Williams Memorial Hospital where she died.

Police have not officially released the names of the victim or the suspect in custody.

At around 10 p.m., Roy Courtoreille, who lives next door to deceased, said he was sitting in his home when he heard sirens and saw police lights reflected in his windows.

He said he went outside and “the RCMP were there. It looked like they were trying to revive someone. I didn’t know who it was at the time, but we found out later it was Linda Lafferty,” he said.

“I know her quite well. Her daughter lives with my son,” Courtoreille said.

There was nothing out of the ordinary earlier in the evening, he added.

Courtoreille said the whole situation is a shock, especially for his area of town.

“You don’t expect something like this, especially in this neighborhood. It’s pretty quiet here,” he said.
