The NWT’s best midget players hit the ice together last weekend to get in a few practices as a team before heading off to Fairbanks, Alaska, next month for the Arctic Winter Games.

The boys played one game against a team from Hay River’s rec hockey league Feb. 21, then two games against the La Crete Lumberjacks Feb. 22 and 23 to get ready.

“Half the kids on the ice on our bench right now are from Hay River,” said Quinn Groenheyde, the midget Huskies’ regular coach. Some players from other parts of the territory couldn’t make it to the weekend camp and their spots were filled by local players.

“It’s a great opportunity to play against a team that actually gets to play in a regular league,” he said.
The NWT girls’ hockey team for the Arctic Winter Games was also in town for the same camp over the weekend.
