Two swimmers from Hay River returned home with medals from a recent swim meet in Yellowknife.

Thirteen-year-old Ryann Hendrickson and eight-year-old Sebastian Berrub both captured overall bronze medals in their age categories at the second-annual Konge Construction Spring Invitational swim meet, held from May 13 to 15.

Hendrickson noted she swam in seven separate races to win the bronze.

“It was pretty good,” she said of her showing, although she admitted to hoping to have finished higher. “But bronze was OK.”

Hendrickson has been swimming for five years.

Both medal winners are members of the Lions Swim Club in Hay River.

Kelvin Yee, head coach of the Lions Swim Club, was pleased with the showing of the team.

“They did pretty good,” he said. “We brought a lot of little kids this time. There were a couple of senior kids, but most of them were little kids. So I mean they all did really well and most of them got seven out of seven personal-best swims.”

Yee noted the competition featured about 150 swimmers.

Nine swimmers competed from Hay River, compared to about 90 from Yellowknife and about 20 from Inuvik.
